José Fernández Vide
José Fernández Vide (known as “Maestro Vide”), outstanding Galician composer, wrote a wide variety of works: for piano, for voice and piano, for band, for orchestra…, as well as choral music, two notable Galician zarzuelas and a great number of pieces belonging to the salon music genre.
The Diputación Provincial de Ourense (Galicia) has published three books that compile his entire pianistic production (first volume), his songs (second volume) and his choral music (third volume). They are working on the publication of a fourth volume containing his zarzuelas.
This edition, which belongs to the series Agra Vella, within the collection Ars Gallaeciae Musicae that Dos Acordes co-publishes with the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries (AGADIC) of the Xunta de Galicia, has been transcribed and revised by Javier Jurado. Violetas consists of a short introduction followed by three independent waltzes, plus a coda, which is actually an extract from the first waltz, the end of the introduction and the third waltz. The lack of complexity of the form and its simple sonority and clear rhythm make this work a very pleasing piece with well-defined and cantabile melodic lines; a clear example of the character of Vide’s compositions.
It is worth highlighting the importance of this edition as a sample of the salon music of the first half of the 20th century, as well as its interest within the scarce production for guitar by Galician composers.
This work has been recorded by Samuel Diz and Fernando Pérez Fernández.
